BC Solar Company Powers Up for Toronto's Largest Solar Installation
Vancouver, November 23, 2006 - Taylor Munro Energy Systems, the
Delta- based solar company that provided the award winning Vancouver
International Airport thermal solar system in 2003, announces the
power-up of the largest commercial solar heating system that Ontario
has yet seen. It opens Saturday November 25 in Toronto.
The project, designed and installed by Taylor Munro, is a solar
rooftop array comprising 60 glazed collector panels with an annual
energy production rate of 134,000 kWh. It is the first of three systems
contracted by Toronto-based Mondial Energy Inc. for a non-profit
housing provider in the East End of the city. Energy production
from the Taylor Munro system will be used for domestic hot water
heating (DHW) in the client's apartment buildings; providing a natural
gas cost saving offset in the range of $10,000. per annum for each
building. When completed, the solar powered DHW systems will also
displace some 80 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per year
for Toronto, a city looking for innovative ways to improve its deteriorated
air quality.
"Taylor Munro has completed the project on time and on budget,
and we are appreciative of their design and implementation work ",
says Mondial Energy President Alex Winch. Mondial, a renewable energy
investor, financed the project with the help of the federal Renewal
Energy Deployment Incentive Program (REDI), that provides a 25% cash
rebate to renewable energy investors.
With several major new projects waiting in the wings - including
another commercial residential installation with Mondial announced
November 14 in Toronto - Taylor Munro Energy Systems is set to become
the go-to Canadian company for large-scale thermal solar applications
for industry, government and remote communities looking to reduce
both heating costs and GHG emissions.
Joe Thwaites, Taylor Munro's President, is the visionary behind
the 12-year-old BC company that has earned a solid reputation as
a leader in the growing Canadian greenbuilding and renewable energy
sector. “ Working together with Mondial and other energy contract
firms, we now have the capability to bring large-scale solar applications
to a whole new level", says Thwaites. "Whether it's a major
retrofit or an application designed into the commercial building
infrastructure from the blueprint stage, the long-term energy cost
savings are proven and substantial. Companies are also realizing
the significant social capital benefits of emission reduction strategies
available to them”.
Under the new federal Clean Air Act announced in October 2006, the
Harper government says it is committed to achieving an absolute reduction
in Canada's GHG emissions between 45 and 65% from 2003 levels by
2050.
Energy production and consumption accounted for 91% of the growth
in GHG from 1990 to 2003 reports Statistics Canada. The sector was
also responsible for 81% of total Canadian greenhouse gas emissions
in the same period.
